The competition season for FIRST® LEGO® League is over. Over 440 area students competed during the 2018-2019 INTO-ORBIT season in this dynamic STEM program that is a signature program of EmBe. They built and programmed their robot to complete missions. They researched and presented their innovative solution. They received their medals and trophies. They danced and had fun. However, most of those 66 teams have now finished their season. However, we do have a few exceptions! LEGOS and Bib #1

2019-04-24T16:26:43-05:00

Like good South Dakotans, we have been leaning into the wind, continuing our work and play through the drifts and flows of our snowy landscape. Although I enjoy the winter’s beauty, I also noticed some signs of spring in the activities of our staff and our wonderful volunteers. One of the best signs of spring? We’ve opened registration for our summer camp programs, most with multiple sessions. Our camps range from babysitting to an introduction to FIRST® Lego® League, from Camp Changemaker to Leadership Camp for Middle School Girls. The first camp is scheduled for May, so be sure to [...]

Washington HS Student Awards EmBe Grant Through Gatorade

2019-02-27T17:25:39-06:00

Lily received her award and presented EmBe representatives with their gift at before one of her games. Sioux Falls native and South Dakota Volleyball Gatorade State Player of the Year, Lily Bartling, awarded EmBe with a $1,000 grant to help accomplish our mission to empower women and families to enrich lives. Sports participation has seen a double-digit decline over the past decade, largely due to tighter budgets in communities, but young people that participate in sports are found to be happier, healthier and better students. Gatorade Play It Forward empowers Gatorade Player of the Year recipients across the [...]

FIRST: For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology As part of leading EmBe, I get to experience the impactful programs that fulfill our mission firsthand. Early on Saturday, February 2nd, I had my first taste of the state competition for FIRST® LEGO® League. The combination of robots, funny hats and coopertition© brought teams from across the state to Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The numbers tell a huge impact story: 30 communities, 149 coaches, 447 students, and dozens of volunteers came together to demonstrate their mastery of technology and gracious professionalism. The purpose of FIRST LEGO League The [...]

2019-02-20T16:41:40-06:00

Now in it's 46th year, EmBe's Tribute to Women celebration recognizes the incredible work that women make in our community. Early in the history of these awards, Government and Law were considered "non-traditional" industries for women. But as more and more women enter law or a life of public service, these ground breaking women have made practicing law and serving in all levels of government a place for women. In 2018, our Government & Law winner was Sandy Frentz with the City of Sioux Falls. We invite you hear from Sandy's nominator why she was so deserving of this honor, [...]

Engage Your Imagination with Dramatic Play

2019-02-19T13:49:10-06:00

In the Dramatic Play Area children take on different roles and recreate real-life experiences. They use props and make-believe to deepen their understanding about the world they live in. The ability to pretend is very important to your child’s development. Children who know how to make believe develop a good vocabulary, which is important for reading. They learn to cooperate with others and solve problems, and are able to think abstractly—all important skills for success in school. When children pretend, they have to recall experiences and re-create them. To do this, they need to picture their experiences in their minds. [...]
