Girls on the Run reaches girls at a critical stage, strengthening their confidence at a time when society begins to tell them they can’t. Underscoring the important connection between physical and emotional health. Each season comes to an end with a joyful and fun non-competitive 5K. The EmBe 5K celebrates and reinforces important lessons. It’s the capstone achievement for participating in the program and gives them a tangible sense of healthy goal setting and success. Due to COVID-19, our 5K will have a few changes! We will be running two different races -- both will have music, warm-ups, medals and post-race [...]

Star Power: Girls on the Run® Helped One Runner Regain her Shine

2020-07-31T07:54:55-05:00

“I hate myself.” Cassidy Wassenaar, a Girls on the Run coach, found this message on one girl’s lap goal card after a long practice.  Concerned, Wassenaar asked her about the message. The little girl explained that it had been a rough day — it was her first time in timeout since kindergarten. Wassenaar spied the perfect teaching moment. “Hating ourselves is like having a cloud over our head,” she explained. “What can we do instead?” The girl replied, “Activate our star power!” Wassenaar helped the girl to find five ways to activate her star power. Star power, a Girls on [...]

LEGOS and Bib #1

2019-04-24T16:26:43-05:00

Like good South Dakotans, we have been leaning into the wind, continuing our work and play through the drifts and flows of our snowy landscape. Although I enjoy the winter’s beauty, I also noticed some signs of spring in the activities of our staff and our wonderful volunteers. One of the best signs of spring? We’ve opened registration for our summer camp programs, most with multiple sessions. Our camps range from babysitting to an introduction to FIRST® Lego® League, from Camp Changemaker to Leadership Camp for Middle School Girls. The first camp is scheduled for May, so be sure to [...]
