2024-02-07T11:56:31-06:00

Meet Andra and Micah, mother and son, who have been loyal swim members at the EmBe pool for years. They swim regularly twice a week in the afternoon. The pool has become more than just a place to exercise; it's a sanctuary where they unwind, calm their minds, and navigate the day's challenges. They appreciate the familiar faces at EmBe and being recognized when they come to swim "We know the staff at the front desk, and they know us. Micah arrives by the Sioux Area Metro bus, and when I come in, Marcia at the front desk tells me [...]

Donor Spotlight: Meet Karen Schreier

2024-02-07T11:34:25-06:00

The EmBe pool has been a staple in Sioux Falls since 1965. For years, it has created a safe space for community members to build confidence and establish lifelong skills for all ages. Karen Schreier utilizes the EmBe pool to swim laps for exercise every day and additionally became a donor after seeing the impact that EmBe makes to assist women and children in the Sioux Falls area. “One of the things that sets EmBe apart from other non-profits in the area is that it focuses on programs that help women and children from birth to old-age to improve and be stronger community members.” At a young age, Karen took early morning swim lessons at her local pool in [...]

For the final Sunday Story, we’re bringing you 100 fun facts about EmBe from our last 100 years! The 1920s YWCA founder, Mabel Crossman, owned the state’s largest chicken hatchery with her husband, even though she was terrified of chickens.  The YWCA was one of the first organizations to offer Kittenball leagues for women. Kittenball is the original name for softball. The first Camp Tepeetonka was on Lake Madison. One of the original classes of the YWCA was a cheese-tasting class.  The YWCA offered a special one-on-one English class for immigrants attempting to learn the language.  President Calvin Coolidge visited [...]

100-Year Sunday Story: The Name Change

2022-09-16T10:52:55-05:00

On April 16, 2013, the Sioux Falls branch of the YWCA cut ties with the national organization and announced the new agency as EmBe. There were many reasons for the change, but ultimately, the organization wanted to be more connected and support and provide resources in the best possible way to the Sioux Falls community.  When the name changed, it didn’t mean that the services had changed. After the switch, EmBe still provided all the services they did before, including childcare services, aquatics, Girls on the Run, Tribute to Women, and all other programs.     By cutting ties with [...]

Finn’s Story

2018-09-14T15:42:44-05:00

Finn was born 15 weeks early and weighed just 1lb 12oz. He spent the first 98 days of his life in the NICU. Because of his early birth, Finn has fine and gross motor delays and Reactive Airway Disease (RAD). Finn saw physical and occupational therapists from the time he was six months old until he was 4.5 years old. At first, his therapies were in-home and then they moved to a clinical setting. As Finn got older, his parents noticed more issues with low muscle tone, coordination, and exhaustion. He struggled with coordination issues, mainly his upper and lower [...]

Aquatics Campaign is Opportunity to Connect to Memories

2019-01-15T13:37:11-06:00

Aquatics Campaign is Opportunity to Connect to Memories  For almost 60 years the pool at EmBe has been providing memories and experiences for many throughout our community. It is the pool where some of our community leaders learned to swim and where their children and now grandchildren are learning to swim.  It’s the pool that has been training competitive swimmers, lifeguards, instructors, and at one time, even trained synchronized swim teams.  And thousands of children have celebrated their birthday with a party in our pool.  Today it is also a place where canoers and divers practice their safety maneuvers.  It [...]
