Three of EmBe’s signature after-school programs will begin in March, and they are in need of volunteers like you! Girls on the Run is an activity-based, positive youth development program for grades 3 through 5, and over 1,500 girls participate in Sioux Falls each year. This bi-annual program teaches life skills, inspires confidence and promotes positive health while preparing the girls to run in a celebratory 5K at the end of the season. Just like Girls on the Run, Heart & Sole also teaches positive health, self-confidence and important life skills, but this is a middle school program for grades 6 through [...]

Sarah Rhea Werner left her full-time day job a little over a year ago to start her own business. She’s a writer. She runs two successful podcasts. She writes a column about podcasting for Forbes magazine. She does public speaking and workshops. She consults on marketing and branding. She supports herself doing things that she loves. Sarah seems to have it all figured out. But in 2014, Sarah didn’t have it all figured out. “I felt stuck in my career. I was a senior content strategist and I was frustrated because I didn’t know how to go beyond where I was. [...]
Jackie’s story is an unlikely one. A single mother of two, Jackie found herself out of work. This led to some financial hardship, including an outstanding balance to her daughter’s childcare center - EmBe. One day, feeling frustrated by her search for a new job, Jackie received a phone call from EmBe looking to collect on Jackie’s outstanding childcare balance. While it started out as what might be considered a collections call, it took a completely different turn. “Basically the conversation went from ‘Oh, you have this balance and we need to find a way to take care of it’ [...]
Over 350 children have enjoyed building and programming their LEGO Mindstorm robots and learning about the interactions between humans and animals during the past season’s FIRST® LEGO® League Animal AlliesSM theme. Fifty-six teams of 9 to 14 year olds were coached by over 130 volunteers. Qualifying competitions were held in Rapid City and Sioux Falls. During the qualifiers, the teams presented their innovative solutions to problems which occur when humans interact with animals, displayed the prowess of their programming and robot design and exhibited their teamwork. Over 100 volunteers helped make these events a fun celebration of the season for [...]
EmBe’s Tribute to Women will celebrate its 45th event this spring, honoring the incredible legacies and achievements in our community. Awards are given out based on nominations sent to EmBe, and winners are not announced until the event. You can send in your nominations through Feb. 23. “When I see nominations open up, I immediately work on thinking of a woman who should be recognized,” says Lucy Albers, senior marketing manager for the Denny Sanford Premier Center. “So many women in my life do incredible things and rarely get recognized for it. Even though we as women often think the things [...]
“Look at what I can be.” You might wonder if that’s Stacy Stahl’s personal mantra or if it’s the underlying theme to the programs she directs at EmBe. The real answer is that it is both. As the Youth Development Director, Stacy has repeatedly shown what she, and her programs can be, by taking on new challenges and roles in her 11 years at EmBe. Before coming to EmBe, Stacy was already paving the way for herself and her community. Taking a job in Japan as an English as a Second Language teacher, Stacy pushed outside of her comfort zone [...]
“Did I tell you I was a singer too?” With a smile and a sly look in her eye, she pulls out her phone and starts to play a song. It’s a jazzy rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow sung by a strong alto voice and accompanied by piano. By this point, it shouldn’t be a surprise that our Director of School Age Care (SAC), Nancy Fallon, has another hidden talent, but her quiet, unassuming manor keeps these gems tucked away. Music is just one of her creative outlets. Taught to play the guitar, accordion, piano and harmonica by her [...]
